*GET TO KNOW: RYAN DOUMIT*

   Q. *WHO IS RYAN DOUMIT?*

A. The powerful switch hitter, and catcher of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Doumit returned from the DL in July after missing nearly 3 months with a wrist injury.

   Q. *WHY IS DOUMIT WORTH NOTING?*

   A. Aside from being one of the last Pirates ‘on deck’ after the recent trades, Doumit is quickly becoming the team’s power-at-bat with the losses of Adam LaRoche and Nate McLouth.

   Q. *HOW HAS HE PROGRESSED?*

   A. In 2007, Doumit played 83 games with 69 hits, 9 homeruns, and 32 RBI’s. This season – Doumit’s played a mere 44 games, while managing 39 hits, 7 homeruns, and 29 RBI’s. When you factor in the injury he sustained, that’s a considerable jump in homeruns and RBI’s in comparison… (Not to mention, nearly a garenteed hit every game…)

   Q. *HOW ABOUT CAREER HIGHLITES?*

   A. 2008 was arguably Doumit’s finest season to date. In 431 at bats, he made contact an astounding 137 times, (.318 AVG,) –  with an on-base percentage of .357, and a slug-percentage of .501. If these stats don’t impress you, consider the leap he made from the 2007 season when he batted a mediocre .274 with an on-base percentage of .341…

   Q. *HOW CAN YOU JUSTIFY HIS POWER?*

   A. To the naked eye, Doumit’s been a professional baseball player for 5 years and hasn’t even hit 50 career homeruns yet. However, out of the 5 years he’s played in the major leagues – only one season allowed Doumit to make an appearance in 100 games or more. (In 2008, Doumit played in 116 games and had 15 homeruns.) As I stated above – Doumit’s made an appearance in 44 games this season, with 7 homeruns to date. That’s half the amount of homeruns he had last year in 72 less games!

J.Quist: Hi. I hope the Pirates keep this guy. They have to keep SOME of their good players! The Yankees have a powerful catcher in the minors, Jesus Montero. He’s supposed to be insanely good. I know this sounds stupid, but I don’t want him. I would rather have Cervelli. I love Cervelli. He’s adorable, and he surprised everyone this year. I hope he is the Yankees future catcher. -Virginia

Doumit is a pretty good player. The only complaints I have is that he’s one of those fragile players that can get hurt at any time. He’s gone on the DL at least once in each of the last 3 seasons. Also, his hustle has been questioned recently. He seems sluggish and doesn’t seem to care. There have been many times he has grounded into double plays and didn’t run full-out down the line. The Pirates are stacked with catchers in the minor leagues, so a trade would be completely justified.

J.Quist: Surgery? Are you ok? I’m familiar with Newburgh. The Renegades’ season is almost over, so we’ll have to wait till next summer! Aahh! That seems so far away!!!
I hope Joba does well. He seems to struggle with the extra rest. But if we lose, at least it is to the Rangers. 🙂
    Get well! -Virginia 🙂

I agree with eatsleepmlb up there. I really like Doumit, alot. but he is standing on thin ice. We have good prospects at catcher and he really could be gone in a seaosn or 2. Jason Jaramillo has been a good backup and prospect Tony Sanchez has been rising greatly through the system and should be in Pitt. in about 2 years. good analysis though
